He predicted the movement both”provocative” and”draconian”, adding the legislation was”unnecessary and confusing”.

“The exact provisions are uncertain and at first reading seem to be draconian, moving farther than the limitations we have been cooperating with during the pandemic so far,” he explained.

“We shall be looking for legal counsel to counsel several questions concerning the extent of the statutory instrument.”

Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Micheál Martin met Irish bishops, including Archbishop Martin, on Thursday, 15 April.

Archbishop Martin stated it was highly unsatisfactory that despite the reassurances given that the taoiseach understood the value of worship to those of Ireland, this statutory instrument was introduced”at a clandestine fashion and without consultation or notice”.

The Irish health ministry has defended the current limitations on Mass, stating there’s a ban on all large indoor gatherings due to the dangers introduced by Covid-19.

Irish broadcaster RTÉ has reported Mr Donnelly said that he had been aware it was a serious imposition for a whole lot of individuals and as soon as public health advice deemed it safe, public Mass could be permitted.

He also stated he’d be delighted to fulfill the bishops.
